SUHAR, JUNE 1

The village of Al Ghizain in the Wilayat of Al Khabourah is emerging as a model of community-driven development, where heritage preservation meets sustainable tourism and public health promotion.

Through the 'Al Ghizain Walkway' project, sections of the historic village have been transformed into a vibrant recreational and tourism space for residents, visitors, and nature enthusiasts.

The initiative is led by the Al Ghizain Healthy Village Committee in collaboration with local citizens. The village, officially recognised as a Healthy Village under the supervision of the Office of the Wali of Al Khabourah, is part of broader efforts to encourage healthier lifestyles, enhance quality of life, and safeguard environmental and cultural assets.

The Al Ghizain Walkway stands as a strong example of effective community partnership, with residents, parents and volunteers actively contributing to development and beautification efforts.

“Al Ghizain Walkway reflects the power of community partnership and volunteerism in creating sustainable projects that benefit both residents and visitors. This initiative supports healthy lifestyles while showcasing the village’s rich natural and cultural heritage. We hope it will continue to grow as a model for community-driven development and sustainable tourism,” said Shaikh Ahmed al Housni.

Key works under the project include the restoration of Falaj Al Ghizain, one of the village’s traditional irrigation channels, along with cleaning and maintenance of its surrounding areas. Upgrades have also been carried out on public facilities, waste management, and access roads, while environmentally friendly seating areas have been installed to enhance visitor comfort.

Tree planting and landscaping initiatives have further improved the site’s ecological value and visual appeal. Plans are also underway to introduce small food corners and kiosks offering local refreshments such as coffee and Omani halwa, adding to the visitor experience.

The walkway encourages residents to engage in regular physical activity in a safe, natural environment while promoting awareness of sustainable health practices. It also supports domestic tourism by highlighting the village’s cultural heritage and natural beauty, reflecting Oman’s authentic identity.

Project organisers say development is ongoing, with future phases set to include expanded walking trails, additional service facilities, and more green spaces to enhance the overall experience.

These improvements are expected to strengthen Al Ghizain’s position as a national model for healthy villages and community-based sustainable tourism.

The Al Ghizain Walkway demonstrates how community commitment, when combined with local resources and shared vision, can transform heritage spaces into meaningful public assets — benefiting people, preserving the environment and supporting sustainable development for future generations.
